Round 1
28/30 March 2003
Silverstone
The first round of the season was always going to be hard in the Yamaha R6 Cup because no-one knew what to expect from the bikes or the other riders. I was glad to have a good qualifying session getting used to my new bike, and I was really pleased to qualify second which maintained my record of
front row starts.
I was still riding in my leathers from 2002 as there was confusion with teams before the start of the season which didn’t leave enough time to order a new set. I was slightly nervous as I pulled up beside Benjie Cockerill on the grid and we were under starters orders. The race got under way and Benjie tried to pull a lead on the rest of the pack. I soon caught Benjie and was happy to sit in second place, sizing up where I could pass him. On lap nine of sixteen, I saw a gap and made a pass. Unfortunately Benjie moved across to block me, we made contact and I went down at a fast priory corner. My first race was over. I was very disappointed and I had no points in the bag. Peter Ward went on to win the race picking up the pieces from everyone else’s mistakes.
