Round 5
16/18 May 2003
Knockhill
After a seven hour journey to a very wet and windy Knockhill in Scotland all I wanted to do was stay on the bike and get some points. It was the first time I’d ever rode at Knockhill so a few laps round in the safety car helped a lot.
It was very hard in practice to learn the circuit as the weather was really bad. I qualified in fourth and I was happy with another front row qualification. As the rain kept falling I kept praying for a dry race, but it never came. I knew that it was going to be very risky the first few laps so I took it steady sitting in eighth position. By half way through the twenty two lap race I had moved into a comfortable six place with a six second gap in front of me and nine seconds behind me. I was happy with my position and the way things were going, until the penultimate lap. On the tricky blind rise chicane I was unfortunate enough to be the eighth victim of the wet race. I hit the white paint markings that are very slippy in the wet which caused me to come off. It was my own mistake and entirely my fault.
It was a long way to travel to crash and come home with no points. Overall it was a disappointing weekend but I can only learn from my mistakes.
