Round 7
4/6 June 2003
Rockingham
As we arrived at Rockingham on Friday we were told that the race meeting may be cancelled due to a fault with the track. The organisers at Rockingham had painted the track that morning at 6am and the paint was not dry in time for any of the practise or qualifying sessions and was very slippy.
We had to wait until 2pm on the Saturday afternoon for the organisers to make a decision as to whether we’d be able to race. They finally decided that the races would definitely go ahead but we would not have time for a qualifying session. They decided that we would start on the grid in our current championship positions, which meant I was on the second row in fifth position.
I sat on the start line and knew that I had to get a good start and pull across the other riders. We set off and I had a great start moving straight into third. Peter Ward came past me and pushed me back to fourth. As we came across the start and finish to complete the first lap, Benjie rode straight into Peter taking him off the track and loosing them both a lot of time, which allowed me to move into second place.
I had closed right in on the leader Tommy Hill when Kieran Clarke passed me. Just as this happened the pace car came out and allowed everyone to bunch back up. The race continued and Tommy made a mistake straight away allowing Kieran, Peter and myself to go through. As we approached the last lap I was third and ready to make the move on both riders until Peter made a big mistake holding me up. We swapped paint work for a few corners up to the finish line but I was happy to finish on the podium in third place.
